About Type 2 Tales

A small workshop for big walks

Type 2 fun is the kind that is miserable at the time and the best story afterwards. We make something solid to hang that story on.

How it started

Three days on the main range

I'm a hiker from Newcastle, NSW. Type 2 Tales started with a three-day trip along the Kosciuszko main range with a few mates. We walked in fog, the false summits kept coming, and one night a storm flattened the tent. It was miserable at the time, and it's now the story we tell most. Hikers call that type 2 fun.

When I got home I wanted something real to keep from that trip, something I could hold rather than another photo on my phone. That's what I make now. I print each disc to order from your own GPX file and finish it by hand.

What we care about

Plain promises

Real terrain, credited

Open elevation data, named on every preview and sheet. Height is gently exaggerated so the hills read.

You see it first

The preview is free and comes before payment. If the shape is not right, you do not pay.

Your route stays yours

Times and heart-rate stripped on arrival; the route deleted 90 days after delivery.

Made to be handled

The disc lifts off its magnetic mount. Keepsakes should get picked up, not just looked at.

How each one is made

Printed in layers, finished by hand

Your route is turned into a 3D model of the terrain around it. The disc is printed in white and green, with the route inlaid in red, and finished by hand. Framed orders are set on a magnetic mount over your printed sheet in a white A4 frame.

The sheet carries the hike name, start and finish, the elevation profile, your name, and the numbers: date, distance, high point, days and location.

Got a GPX?

You are a minute away from a preview

It costs nothing to look. Upload the file, check the shape, and decide then.
